Modern elementary school building located at 701 E. 8th St. in Stromsburg, Nebraska. The single-story building was constructed in 1962 and contains approximately 28,000 square feet of space. The building includes approximately 25,500 square feet of classroom and support space and approximately 2,500 square feet of multi-purpose area. The property is approximately 9.19 acres in size with large vacant areas north and east of the school building.
The building is constructed on a concrete slab. Floor coverings are a combination of commercial grade vinyl tile and carpet. The classrooms are heated with electric heat and cooled by exterior electric summer air-conditioning compressors. The heating / cooling systems are adequate for the current and most potential uses. Lighting is generally fluorescent and incandescent. The building is serviced by a 600 amp electrical service. The roof is a flat steel joist system with steel deck and an EPDM blotter and ballast roof cover system. Reportedly 75% of the roof cover is new. Interior finish is typical school office and classroom finish with walls typically painted concrete block walls or taped and painted gypsum board. Ceilings are taped and painted drywall in the original building and suspended mineral tile panel system in the new addition. The multi-purpose room has an open ceiling.
The original 3-story building contains approximately 16,696 square feet on the first level, 9,188 square feet on the second level, and 4,480 square feet on the third level. There have been several one-level additions added to the original building, including a masonry addition in the 1980’s of approximately 14,542 square feet. This area was added directly north of the original structure and included a gymnasium, lockers, storage, and hallways. Also in the 1980’s, a pre-engineered steel addition was attached to the west side of the original structure. This is currently utilized and referred to as the band room and contains 2,100 square feet. In the 1990’s, another 6,501 square feet was added to the northeast side of the building and generally consisted of athletic support areas. In addition, it appears that the original gymnasium / auditorium was rehabbed into a more theatrical design than its original design. Overall, the school building contains approximately 53,507 square feet on 3 levels, with 39,839 square feet on the first level. The property is approximately 3.34 acres in size with a smaller 9,900 Square Foot lot south of the primary site that is current being used as a gravel parking lot.
